Travel Outfit

I had quite the traveling problems trying to get back to Miami after Christmas, let me tell you. My first flight on the 26th was delayed to the point where I would miss my connector flight, so I was able to reschedule to another flight the next morning at 7 am. Around 5 pm the night before that flight I got an email that it was cancelled. When I called Southwest to find another flight, they said they had no flights available again until SUNDAY. Yes, Southwest had no flights available for 4 days. Ridiculous. So, I cancelled my Southwest flight and ended up booking a Jet Blue flight for Friday morning (today). Everything seemed to be going well - I waited less than 5 minutes in the security line, we boarded the plane on time... but right before we were scheduled to leave, the pilot said they were having trouble starting one of the engines. THREE HOURS LATER we finally took off! My poor dog Wednesday was cooped up inside her cage for almost 9 hours :( On a positive note, this was my first flight with Jet Blue and I loved the TVs in the headrests and the snacks! I'll def be looking to fly them again in the future, despite the 3 hour delay. Here is what I wore on the plane. I'll admit I was pretty hot when I got back to Florida but I was comfortably warm on the plane. P.S. - today is my birthday! I'm looking forward to dinner (if I don't sleep through it - I was up since 3 AM after all...) and going out with some of my friends tonight!

December Budget Recap

I'm linking up with Franish for Budgeting Bloggers. My December budget went to shit because I moved on December 1 - I had to pay 3 months advance rent (1 month + 2 security deposits) and when I got into my apartment I realized there was no storage space so I took a trip to Ikea where I dropped about $150 on various storage solutions. I don't have a place in my budget for random Ikea trips so now I just feel guilty. Plus, it's the holidays so I spent money on gifts for other people. I really don't know how to deal with this month when determining if I stuck to my budget!

I was hoping to allocate my entire "clothing" budget to gifts for others, but instead, I spent money on myself and then I still spent money on gifts. I ended up pushing purchases into random categories to try to make sure I stuck to my budget and I think I came out OK for this month.

Things I bought for myself:
4 blouses from Old Navy: $45
Dress and Jacket from Forever 21: $35 (after using a $20 store credit)
Neiman Marcus x Target Tory Burch Lunch Box & Altuzarra Tray: $53 with tax
TOTAL: $133 (I give myself $200 a month for clothing)

Things I got for others:
Bath & Body Works: $64 (2 candles, 3 lotions, and 3 body scrubs)
wine preserver pump: $16
Wrapping paper/supplies & wine from Walgreens: $19
Neiman Marcus x Target Tracy Reese Dessert Plates: $20 at and in-store
TOTAL: $119 (I put these items into my "entertainment" category which I allocate $100 to each month, so I was about $20 over budget)

Obviously it was also Christmas and my birthday is on the 28th, so I was bombarded with gifts. I don't want to brag about things I got but I wanted to highlight some of my favorite things that I thankfully was able to receive without pulling from my own tight budget.

For Christmas, my parents got me (and I picked it out for myself and my cousin) the Sephora Fragrance Sampler. I just found out about this sampler this year, and I wish I had known about it sooner. The sampler comes with 10 mini bottles of popular fragrances AND includes a voucher to redeem your favorite of the 10 in a full-size bottle. I think it's a great deal because a bottle of perfume usually costs the same amount as the entire set, and this way, you get to choose your favorite rather than end up with a perfume that sits on your counter never used!
For my birthday, my parents got me a gold leather Kate Spade business card holder. It was not what I was expecting for a business card holder (I was planning on purchasing one myself in like a chrome or other metal) but after receiving it I decided it's perfect for me. I'm a woman, obviously, so I think it's OK to go a little glam with something like a business card holder. It adds a little personality to something so serious! I love the color gold they chose for me, I wish I could find it online!
My aunt gave me the fantastic Michael Kors Gia Tote for my belated law school graduation present. We talked about her getting me a big tote for work a few months ago but I thought she forgot - I was pleasantly surprised that she didn't! I love how sturdy this bag feels, and how it's large enough to fit almost anything, including the ever-important legal file or my computer.

I hope everyone had a happy holiday! My flight(s) were cancelled and now I'm "stuck" in CT (could be worse!) until Friday morning.

Christmas Eve Outfit

I'm blogging from CT for the holidays with a limited wardrobe as usual. I packed even less clothing than usual with the anticipating of hauling back my gifts with me to Miami :) Here is the outfit I'm wearing tonight to my family's Christmas Eve party. Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year - my aunt has a huge party and all of my family comes. It is usually the only time during the year that all of us are together under one roof. This year I'm wearing a bright green blouse as my hint of Christmas color. How do you inject some holiday spirit into your outfits?

daily work outfits

Sometimes I either don't have time to take nice photos or I don't feel an outfit is worthy of being posted on the blog. Here is a compilation of outfits I've worn to work in the past 2 weeks that don't deserve individual posts but I thought I'd share together.
This week I had my first 14-hour work day, and I surprisingly found it was one of the days that went by the quickest. I covered my boss's court calendar in the morning while he was away, I wrote objections to a pre-sentence investigation report (a PSI is basically an entire history of your criminal life plus your family life and it helps federal judges (not sure if state judges can get PSI's also?) when they choose your sentence), did a ton of research, and then finished the day by going to visit inmates at a jail 20 miles away - I didn't get home until 10 pm.

(This day my boss forgot to tell me I had to go to court for him until after I already arrived at my office, so I had to go to court in JEANS! I was seriously so embarrassed but at least I was wearing my darkest jeans I own that day. You should have seen me - I was using the files to cover as much of my legs as possible. Good times. I brought an extra pair of dress pants to work to keep in my desk the next day so this will never happen again.)

white, yellow, turquoise

First off - I haven't had internet since Saturday morning and I've been going crazy. Last week I was without internet for about 4 days also. I've spent hours on the phone with Comcast trying to figure it out, I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow (Tuesday) but yet somehow today the internet decided to work. I'm so over this! Anyway, I mean to post this outfit sooner but there was the whole no internet thing.

I wore this out on Friday night to a Chanukah party at a friend's apartment. The yellow and blue in my outfit were actually chosen intentionally for Chanukah colors! Since becoming an "adult," the last thing I want to do on a Friday night is go out anywhere. I swear, I don't know how people find the energy to have fun after a full work week. Saturdays are my jam - I'll do anything on a Saturday lol, but you basically have to force me to go out on Fridays. I'm glad I went out this time though because it was great to catch up with friends I haven't seen in months.
In fashion related ramblings, I've talked before about how much I love this blouse from Old Navy. As I was getting ready to go out today I thought "why don't I own this in more colors?!" and I have no good reason not to. The shirt is affordable, easy to maintain, and can be worn to work or on the weekend... It turned out that Saturday I woke up to an email saying Old Navy was having a 30% off sale, so I went into the store and all the roll-cuff blouses were $15 plus 30% off.... I bought 4 colors lol. FYI white is really the only see-through one.

Decorating for a Small Space

I moved from a fairly spacious 710 square foot apartment to a 650 square foot apartment. 50 feet smaller might not seem like a big deal, but the layout for my new apartment was quite different from the old which presented several challenges. With the open concept kitchen, I really had no need for my kitchen table or chairs anymore, but couldn't bear to part with them. The living room area is considerably smaller, so I struggled with floor space. Furthermore, and most importantly, there is NO storage space in the apartment. I have 3 closets - but one of them houses a stackable washer dryer, the other houses the air conditioning unit and water heater, and the last houses my clothes. The clothes closet in this apartment is half the size of the walk-in I had for the last 3 years! After moving to this new place I quickly realized only half of my clothes that need hangers could be hung up.
Ikea has become my best friend. There are probably other stores that have great storage solutions, but I like Ikea for its mostly modern furniture, its inexpensive options, and the "experience" - if you've ever been to an Ikea store you know what I mean. My most recent trip was the first time I ate the meatballs - they were delish! Once in high school my friends and I played hide and go seek inside Ikea (dorks!) and I'll never forget that.
Anyway, the biggest issue I faced in this new place was the fact that I had a lot of STUFF and had nowhere to put it. That's why finding furniture that doubles as storage is so important. The futon shown above has a huge storage compartment below it. Inside, I put all my sweatshirts and tee shirts that I don't wear that often, as well as all my dresses - formal, going out, and daytime dresses. I decided that with my limited closet space, I should hang the clothes I wear daily (like blazers, suits, blouses, and pants for work) and put away clothes that I don't have the chance to wear as often. The challenge will be to remember these clothes exist and to search them out and wear them despite the added effort of going under a futon to find them - oh, and to iron them :(
The storage unit on the above right is my newest purchase from Ikea. The 8 fairly large baskets hold everything from my Barbri books that I won't throw out until I take my next bar exam, my Wii, my dog's toys and grooming supplies, and my DVD collection. I like the idea that I can throw anything inside these baskets and the clutter won't show.
A note about the art - I never thought I'd purchase art from Ikea, but here we are. I thought the large painting above was a steal at $49, and it reminds me of the work of graffiti artist Banksy. Ikea also had some really great pop-art heavy duty posters available for $9.99. I bought two - see below. I'm waiting to buy art from Etsy to fill the space above the futon.
Although there really was no need or space for my kitchen table, the beautiful thing about Ikea furniture is a lot of it is very versatile. This particular table to the left is folded up to less than half its normal size! I'm now able to keep it for (hopefully) a larger apartment in the future, but also able to make use out of it as a small desk here. One of my favorite items I purchased from Ikea were the two grey lucite chairs shown above at the table. Unfortunately they are not showcased in this place as much as the last, but I'm just glad I didn't have to throw them out or give them away.
Finally, this has nothing to do with decorating, but here is the view from my balcony at night. I wish I was actually living IN downtown Miami, but looking at it is pretty cool, too.

So, maybe my little tips were obvious but I will summarize:
1. Find furniture that can serve double duty and has storage.
2. If possible, find furniture that is versatile and can be transformed based on the size of your space - you don't want to move and find that nothing you own fits!
2. Maximize floor space. Things that don't need to go on the floor (like my little chachki things above) can find other homes.
3. Clutter only makes your small space look smaller - find ways to conceal it.
4. When dealing with small closets, don't be afraid to pack up clothes you don't wear and put them away for the season. Just don't forget they exist entirely!

the oldest thing in my closet

This skirt is the oldest thing in my closet. My mom bought it for me to wear to my 9th grade Confirmation. I wore it then with a black shirt and black flats. On my super skinny 9th grade self, the outfit looked ridiculous and was unimaginative. I now realize 2 things: 1) that pencil skirts really are timeless. I mean, this skirt is 11 years old for instance! 2) that longer skirts should be paired with heels. I don't think I would wear flats with this skirt because it'd make me look shorter than I already am.

day to night: brown tweed

I wore this look on Friday. The suit I wore to work, and the jeans I wore to dinner. Friday was a pretty fun day at work - I went to traffic court for the first time and got a client's license reinstated and his tickets dismissed, I went to depositions on an attempted murder trial, and I went to the federal prison to visit an inmate. And I got compliments on my necklace and my suit from different people. For dinner, my BF and I decided to go to a restaurant on Miracle Mile called Spris. The service was not fantastic, but the food was AMAZING. I had pasta stuffed with pears in a cheese sauce and my boyfriend had the tilapia fish special. We will definitely be going back to eat there again!

sitting happens

I haven't worn this skirt in forever - probably over a year. It definitely has potential to match a lot of outfits because of all the colors in the skirt. I decided to wear it with one of my new Florence Adams blouses, and I added a tan blazer to try to hide some of the colors. Without the blazer I would feel confident in saying the satin shiny material from both the blouse and skirt combined with their bright colors is just too much.
Did you notice I'm in a different setting? Welcome to my new balcony. I am still figuring out lighting and the best placement for the camera and will hopefully have it down to a science after this week. I can't wait to show pictures of my new place - I just have to finish getting everything "in order" the way I like it and then I'll take some photos. My parents have been asking me for pics too and I just don't want to take them with like hangers and suitcases all over the place! I also want to apologize for the wrinkles in my skirt - but this is what happens after a full day of sitting.

The Liebster Award

The lovely Samantha from Sam Ipsa Loquitur chose me as one of the recipients of the Liebster Award! Thank you!
The Liebster award is given by a blogger to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. Liebster is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. Once nominated, you must post 11 facts about yourself, then answer the questions the nominator made for you. Next, you create 11 new questions for the bloggers you nominate. Then you choose 11 blogs to nominate, and be sure to link them to your post. Finally, go to their page and tell them. No tags back allowed!

11 Facts About Me
  • I love pickles, especially half-sour pickles.
  • I never ate eggs until I started dating my boyfriend and he forced me. I actually like them now (some styles).
  • I love my dog Wednesday like a daughter.
  • I was born in CT, moved to MD for college, and moved to FL for law school.
  • I think "ugly" dogs are the cutest - my parents have a Pekingese and a Japanese Chin and I have a French Bulldog. I'm also partial to Pugs.
  • I own more shoes than I can count.
  • My home decor aesthetic is definitely modern.
  • I was in a sorority in college, and it was every bit as stereotypical as you would think (and by far my favorite thing about college).
  • When I was 18 I participated in an exchange program in Paris for a month before going to college.
  • I'm afraid of flying (this is a new development and I'm not happy about it because I fly semi-often).
  • I am an excellent parallel parker, but I can't back into a spot for the life of me.

  1. Why did you start blogging?
    • I started reading petite-centric blogs in December 2010 (I didn't know other fashion blogs existed at the time, lol) and started thinking about what I could contribute to the community. The ultimate push was when one of my best friends told me she was jealous of my wardrobe and I decided if one person liked my clothes maybe other people would too.
  2. Link us up to one of your favorite outfit posts ever.
    • This was hard because I like a lot of my outfits - there isn't ONE that stands out above all the rest. But this one is my "most pinned" outfit so I guess not only do I like it, but other people liked it too!
  1. If you could raid one celeb's closet, who would it be?
    • I feel like this is the most generic answer but I guess Olivia Palermo. Girl's got a good closet. To be honest I don't follow celeb fashion that much.
  2. Who are your style icons?
    • Going off the last question, I don't follow celebrity fashion that much, so I don't really get style inspiration from anyone in particular. However, I've always wanted to have a dress/hairdo like Holly Golightly/Audrey Hepburn so I guess that's one. I get most of my style inspiration from other blogs, Pinterest, and subconsciously (like possibly from seeing people on the street and I don't realize).
  3. Where do you work, and what's the dress code?
    • I work at a law firm, I'm a lawyer. I have a pretty relaxed dress code where I wear jeans, heels or closed-toe flats, a blouse and a blazer most days, but when I go to court I wear a suit.
  4. Dog person or cat person?
    • Dogs definitely! I have a French Bulldog named Wednesday after Wednesday Addams.
  1. What's your star sign?
    • Capricorn - and I have a tattoo on my ankle of the symbol. I used to actually read my horoscope and care about it (hence the tattoo) but honestly I've regretted the tattoo for at least 3 years now. Time to consider laser removal!
  2. What's your favorite trend this year?
    • My favorite trend is the oxblood/burgundy trend of this fall/winter. I know it comes back every year but I think that's the beauty of it. It's not something like "harem pants" where there is a specific item of clothing that is on trend. When a color is trendy (like mint of the spring/summer) you can buy any item in that color that fits your lifestyle and make it work for you - whereas harem pants will just never work for me.
  3. You just won $5,000: shopping spree, vacation, or something else?
    • Ugh, if you had asked me this question 6 months ago when I was still in law school I'd say shopping spree! But now that I'm on my own and paying for my own life I'd say the 5k would be put away for future rent :( BORING!
  4. What's your favorite non-bloggy hobby?
    • I don't know if this is a hobby, but I love food. I really look forward to trying new restaurants and eating delicious things on the weekends. I just moved, too, so I'm looking forward to exploring my new neighborhood!
  5. What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a blog?
    • I don't think I'm qualified to give an answer to this! I've been blogging for a year and a half without much "success" - but that's also because I refuse to do a lot of things everyone tells you you have to do to get followers - like commenting on every single blog you come across with your link (I never leave my link - I just use "openID"), I often forget to join linkups because they require too much foresight haha, I don't use Twitter yet so I don't tweet at brands and other bloggers, I don't have a Facebook page, etc etc etc. But to get back to the point of the question - if you decide you want to start a blog, I think you should decide if you want your blog to be a fun hobby for yourself, or if you want to try to make money/get sponsors. There are two very different paths to follow. For me, I do this for myself, and as of right now I don't have time to make this into a money-making opportunity, but if you want it to be that, go and do some of the things above that I said I never do lol.
Ok - My apologies if you have more than 200 followers - it's hard to tell with RSS feeds and all the other platforms. I also don't follow that many blogs that have less than 200 followers - and some others that I would have tagged have already been tagged!
