Mixing Metals

I wore this to a wine and cheese type get together on Saturday night. I asked the host what to wear and got a very vague answer, so I ended up dressing pretty casually. Little did I know that all the other women were going to wear dresses and heels! You always hear the saying that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed, and I wish I had heeded that advice this time! In terms of the outfit, I drew inspiration from the tan overlay on the black shirt, and decided to mix metals on my wrist because the gold and silver could both technically "go" with an outfit like this. At first I also had on 3 necklaces in different metals, but considering there were going to be many people at this gathering that I didn't know, I decided to tone it down a bit and only wore one necklace. What do you think about mixing metals? Is it something that you've done before, or would you do it in the future?

New Favorite: Rebecca Minkoff MAC Daddy Bag

I went to TJ Maxx a few weekends ago to find pet waste bags (TMI?) and I came across this Rebecca Minkoff "MAC Daddy" bag on clearance for $99. It's been a while since I scored something great at TJ Maxx, but whenever I do, it reminds me of what a great store it can be. I certainly don't need yet another bag, but I loved this one's larger size, the black hardware was something a bit different, and I loved the neutral tan color. It definitely goes with a lot of my clothes. I had a store credit left over from another returned purchase a while ago so I decided to use it on this bag - it only "cost" me $10 after the gift card! Here's how I wore it this weekend to run some errands, and below that how I wore it last weekend to wear to work. (Yes, work on the weekend. The life of a young lawyer, lol.)
Shirt: Express (similar idea w/ black trim)

And a fun beauty tidbit: I got acrylics put on and after a week the polish had noticeably chipped. I was thinking about tearing them off "early" (they are supposed to last 2 weeks) when I Googled whether it was possible to put gel polish on top of acrylics - IT IS! So I took off the polish and re-did the acrylic nails with my at-home gel polish that I have. They look so much shinier and now they'll definitely stay at least a week (if not more) before I go back to the salon for a fill (or maybe I'll just do my nails at home again!). Apparently this is something you can ask for if you go to the salon - you can ask for a gel top coat over your acrylic nails and it makes the polish last the full 2 weeks with no chipping. Worth it!

July Budget Recap

I'm linking up with Franish for Budgeting Bloggers! After not doing that great last month, I stayed more on track this month (although still slightly over budget) despite Ann Taylor's mega sale (extra 60% off sale, plus an extra 10% off for the semi annual sale). Here's what I bought:

1) Ann Taylor Paisley Border Shift Dress - $36
I already talked about my reasons for keeping the dress here.
2) Ann Taylor Perfect Patent Pumps - $43 (returned because I didn't take them out of the box in over 4 weeks!)
The Perfect Pumps from AT are some of the most comfortable shoes I own, as with all their shoes, really. I didn't really need another pair of black pumps, but I don't have patent ones and the price was too good for these workhorse shoes not to buy them.  (FYI, it appears Ann Taylor has changed the style of their perfect pumps to have a slightly thicker heel, so I anticipate they are phasing out all the old ones and you can probably get them on sale until they are all sold out!)

3) Ann Taylor Dashing Dots Tunic - $23
LOVE THIS TOP! I can't say enough good things. I love it, the end.

4) Ann Taylor Chain Mesh and Bar Necklace - $11
It's simple, it's pretty, it's a good replacement for my other dainty gold necklace which broke, and it was cheap.

5) Ann Taylor Cutout Back Crepe Top (2 colors) - $18 each
Love these tops too. Business in the front, party in the back! I've worn them casually and to work already. Love that the high neckline in the front is perfect to show off necklaces. The material is easy to iron - wrinkles just melt away.
6) Ann Taylor Twist Wrap Jersey Dress - $29
I decided to keep the dress when the mega sale hit. The original sale price of $45 was a bit too much for me, but you can't beat the $29 price. I love the turquoise color and the fit. The only worry I have is the rayon material, which I just found out is prone to pilling, according to one of Jean's recent posts. No pilling problems yet, though!
7) Lulu's Dresses - $51 (for 2)
8) Rebecca Minkoff "MAC Daddy" (different color) (from TJ Maxx) - $99 - gift card = $10

TOTAL: $231 $188 (adjusted after return of shoes)
I'm a little over budget this month. If I don't wear the patent pumps in the next week or so I'm going to return them (or if you want to buy (they are size 7) them I'll ship them to you - $43 plus shipping - just email me). I think I had sale goggles on when I bought them (don't need a pair of black pumps but then again I'll definitely use them if I ever get around to taking them out of the box). Did you stick to your budget this month? Did you pick up anything great?!

July 24, 2013

Two for one deal today because I don't feel either outfit warranted it's own post.
I got so many compliments when I wore this suit and necklace combo. I love how just changing accessories can make a simple look feel different each time. Remember the last time I wore this suit? Same but sorta different, right? I also wore the suit again today to court, jail, a client meeting, (and a very long drive to court in Naples) with my favorite gold curb chain necklace and snake-print pumps.

I bought this Loft paisley sweater on a whim at the mall a few weeks ago during a great sale. The only other yellow item I own is a yellow t-shirt so I thought I could get some use out of this dressier sweater tee. It's also really light weight (and semi-sheer.. I wore a nude bra and you couldn't tell for work) so it's perfect for Miami weather. I also like the array of colors in the paisley. I'd also love to wear this sweater with my red/orange sweater, a burgundy blazer, my army green J. Crew jacket, purple J. Crew blazer, white Zara blazer, blood orange moto jacket.. and on and on. Man, I have a lot of ideas for this little shirt.

Ann Taylor killed my wallet again with their extra 60% off sale. I picked up a few more things that I wanted to try along with some pretty jewelry to slightly update my collection. Did you shop the AT sale?

#ASOSPenthouse Miami at the Soho Beach House

This weekend has been full of fun and new opportunities for me. I was invited to the ASOS Penthouse party in Miami on Saturday at the Soho Beach House on Miami Beach. ASOS is one of my favorite online retailers so I was really excited to go to this party. It was definitely a swanky and cool place to be. However, I will say I expected more given the name behind the party. Given that there were free drinks at the Raleigh on Friday night I thought there'd be free drinks at the ASOS event too (there were, but only for designated VIP people. Don't know how they made the designation). There was some free stuff to be had, but the people in charge didn't seem to be too good about giving it out. There was a machine out front where you could tweet at the vending machine and it would dispense a bathing suit. My friend and I were like 6th in line to get into the party (we got there early) but the PR girl at the front I guess was in a bad mood because the party was starting late (it was supposed to start at 4 but I don't think we went inside until around 4:30) so she forbade anyone from tweeting at the machine because the line was being held up and forced us to go upstairs to the party and said that we could do it later. Yea, well, when we went out later the machine was empty, lol. I can only imagine if the hardest day at my job was when a party doesn't start on time.
I started with the bad things but - the good things! The Soho House is a members only place so it was an honor to be inside and be a guest! We were surrounded by beautiful, cool, and well-dressed people. It made for great people watching. We loved pointing out all the designer items we saw and complimenting (and sometimes critiquing) people's outfit choices. The view was fantastic - we had a great spot on a couch facing the ocean. It wasn't too hot despite being outside because the breeze up high was great. There was free Perrier water in several flavors (I tried the lime and pink grapefruit - loved them!). There was a DJ spinning the entire time. Played a lot of cool kinda groovin electronic music. Don't know the proper terminology but it's not house, it wasn't anything to pump your fists to, it's kinda funky sounding. I hear it a lot whenever I go to Spazio Nero in Brickell. I stole the pic above off Twitter. I think it's a good representation of what the party looked like. There were reserved cabanas behind the couch where people were lounging around. There was a bar to the right of the screen. My friend and I are sitting on the couch there! After we left there was some live entertainment but we were too hungry to stick around til the end.

You've already seen variations of this outfit before. I knew I had to wear shorts because it was going to be outside and hot and I decided on the leopard ones because they evoke "Miami" to me.

I had a great time at the event and hope I have the opportunity to do similar things in the future. I realized there must be people who do this kind of stuff every weekend so now I want to meet those people and be friends with them! Miami has so much to offer in terms of fashion, style, and parties and I'm only just beginning to experience them after 4 years living here.

Mercedes-Benz Swim 2014: Dolores Cortes

I had the pleasure of being invited to the Dolores Cortes show at the Raleigh Hotel last night to preview her 2014 swimwear line. First of all, here's what I decided to wear:
professionally petite, lawyer fashion blog, coral lace dress, snake print pumps, amrita singh necklace, michael kore tortoise watch
Dress: ASOS (similar)

First off, I'm so happy I wore a semi loose fitting dress because it was WAY hotter than I thought it would be. I never sweat walking from my car to the office but standing outside for a few hours really got to me, haha. I noticed that you could really wear whatever you wanted. One thing for sure, whether you went casual or dressy, everyone was dressed so well. Even the people in t-shirts and shorts had some style to them, you know? It felt great being around so many stylish and cool people. You might also notice I'm a bit tanner in these pictures than in the past...well, I used the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs lotion on my legs and arms. I used the darkest color, by the way. I also used a darker foundation than usual on my face and neck to (hopefully) make the transition from my face to extremities less obvious. I was a bit worried that people could tell the tan was super fake (and I became more worried from about 7:30-8:00 PM when I started to sweat) but no one said anything (F them if they did!) and it got dark enough out around 8 that I don't think anyone could tell anyway! Anyway, on to the show.

The theme of the show, "Jungle Punk," was consistent throughout. It took me a bit to get my camera at the right setting to take good pictures, so I missed a bunch from the beginning. I put in a Youtube video of the show at the end so you can see the whole collection. There were a lot of unique and detailed pieces from the collection. Check out some of my favorites below!
dolores cortes, swim week 2014
Unlike my own preference for 2-pieces at the beach, I was drawn to mostly 1-pieces in this show.
dolores cortes, swim week 2014
This one had sexy mesh panels on the sides. The bathing suit before this had mesh panels across the chest, lol.
dolores cortes, swim week 2014
I loved the jagged edges of this suit.
dolores cortes, swim week 2014
There were a few really pretty skirt/bikini combos. I'd definitely wear this skirt as a coverup at the beach. The green is so pretty and vibrant.

The last 3 suits were my favorite from the show. The floral/feather-like 3-D details were so gorgeous.

If I wasn't worried about tan lines, I would buy this in a second. So in love with this suit.

This was the "finale" suit. The spikes are definitely not practical for the beach, but I still loved it. One of my favorites.

Thank you to Feinberg PR and Dolores Cortes for thinking of me! I had a great time and I hope more shows are in my future!

Over Analyzing

Not going to lie, I felt a little bit like a trend salad in this outfit. But the good thing about Miami is that there are always going to be people dressed crazier than you, so I didn't feel totally out of place during a night out wearing this. I like the peplum and full skirt combination. (I definitely got the idea from other bloggers - of course Atlantic Pacific does it all the time, and gotta give props to Crazy Style Love because she looks great in it too).  However, I don't love the pattern mixing here. I have been looking for a plain white or black peplum top but have yet to find one I like enough to buy. I think if I could re-do the outfit I'd go with a solid color instead. Do you ever analyze your outfits after the fact?

Third Thursday Threads: Stripes

I'm linking up with Bri at Work Clothes I Suppose for Third Thursday Threads (and Tara at Mix and Match Fashion for Summer Style, and Vodka Infused Lemonade). The theme this month is stripes! I'm down with stripes. I don't own too many striped things, but I remembered I had this dress tucked away under my futon (where clothes go to die, unfortunately) and thought it was the perfect time to bust it out again. I wore this to run some errands on Sunday: took my dog Wednesday to the park, went to the bank and the grocery store. How do you wear your stripes?

Ann Taylor Paisley Border Shift Dress 2 Ways

When I went to the mall Saturday to return some things to Ann Taylor, I brought this dress with me. It was the one thing that I was iffy about in my order. I did love the dress, but I knew I had no immediate need for it. I got a really great price for it ($36), but I've been pretty good about not keeping something just because it's cheap. But this dress wasn't just a cheap find for me - I love the paisley print, I think the dress shape is interesting, and I could see it worn somewhere like a daytime wedding, a networking event, brunch, or even casually. I just don't have any wedding invites, scheduled networking events, brunches, or anywhere to wear it right now, haha. What ended up selling me on the dress was when I took it out of the bag at the AT store to return it - the sales associate immediately swooned and said "you're returning THAT! It's so pretty! If you return it I'm going to buy it!" Call it peer pressure, but I immediately decided to keep it - or at least keep the receipt and think about the purchase a bit more before returning the dress. Here are two ways I'd wear it:
1) I'd wear this to a wedding in a heartbeat

Uncomfortably Comfortable

When my parents moved last summer, I went home for a week and helped them pack up the house. I also cleaned out my childhood room and gave away a lot of my clothes that had been sitting there unworn throughout undergrad and law school. I saved this sort of odd maxi skirt from the giveaway pile, though. I think I bought it in 8th grade to wear to a dance or something, but I don't think I even wore it. Maxi skirts are definitely back in style now, but I swore when they came back on the scene that I'd never wear one. I'm not sure of my logic. Anyway, today when I went to get dressed, I saw the snake print of this skirt peeking out from beneath other clothes and I decided to give it a try. I definitely felt very outside my comfort zone wearing the skirt, but the actual outfit was very comfortable. I should have taken everyone's word for it that maxi skirts were comfortable! I wouldn't call myself a maxi skirt convert yet, but I definitely won't write them off so quickly like I did before. Do you own any maxi skirts or dresses? Are there any trends that you were against for no logical reason, and later found out you liked them?

Moroccan Style Home from Bravo's "Property Envy"

Other than fashion, one of my other passions is interior design. I love dreaming about my future home, reading design blogs, and watching House Hunters and other HGTV renovation/home buying shows. A recent favorite show of mine is "Property Envy" on Bravo, which I just discovered today and watched a few episodes. The episodes I watched today featured one of the most beautifully styled/decorated homes I've ever seen, and I wanted to share it here.
This is an indoor/outdoor foyer with a retractable glass ceiling. The entire home is covered in moroccan details like you see on the divider between the first and second floors.
This is a large living area inside the home - look at the cut out shapes in the ceiling! I love the black ceiling itself but the cut out sky lights are so fantastic.
This is another living area inside the home. I loved this picture because it showcases the gorgeous black and white marble floor, and the moroccan style window details.
I believe this is the master bedroom, but all the bedrooms in the house have this beautiful detailing behind the beds. It's like a headboard, but it's the entire wall! Ugh, I die.

The problem I'm running into is that I can't pinpoint my interior design style - I love so many different things. Sometimes I think when I finally have a house I'll do a different style for every room to have a little taste of everything, but then I see entire houses decorated in one style and I think how great that looks, too. The good thing is I anticipate I have many, many years to go before owning my own home so I have a long time to plan and dream :)

Navy, Cobalt, Ikat, & Snake

I wore this to court in the morning on Friday and then spent the rest of the day in the office. My bosses have a federal trial coming up in a week and I spent this entire week going through all the discovery. For non lawyers - discovery is just documents, videos, witnesses, etc. - anything that's going to be used at trial. I worked on nothing else this week except labeling the discovery - that should explain how expansive/cumbersome this project was. My entire office was literally filled with boxes and binders. My boss would come in and check on me every once in a while and near the end he just laughed because you could barely see me sitting behind my desk with all the boxes strewn around the room, haha. Anyway, I'm loving the combination of navy and other blues recently. I've worn these suit separates with different shades of blue tops twice this week. I also broke another necklace - my Barney's one that I wear pretty often. I was picking up my dog and somehow her harness or something got caught on the necklace and it broke into like 5 pieces... I'm so mad at myself. Two amazing necklaces ruined in one week! Hopefully I can repair this one though - I just have to find tiny pliers. I did receive this pretty decent replacement in the mail a few days ago from Ann Taylor (wearing below) however. It was only $10 after the sales and it couldn't come at a better time since my other necklace shattered.

White & Leopard

I'm so in love with these tops from Ann Taylor that I wore them two days in a row, this time in white. I wore this to go spend the afternoon in DC and in Baltimore at night. I had lunch at District of Pi in DC - pretty good pizza. I'm partial to certain pizza places and this one was good, but nothing special in my opinion. Then we stopped by the National Portrait Museum which was right near the restaurant. I have been to most of the museums in DC but never this one. I loved the Hall of Presidents - the portraits were great and the mini blurbs next to them were very interesting to read. They also have a special exhibit going on currently of a bunch of old Time magazine covers. Later that night, I drove to Baltimore to meet up with some of my friends from college.. long drive but worth it!

Weekend Casual Feat. Ann Taylor Open Back Crepe Top

I wore this Friday. We had lunch at Founding Farmers - one of my favorite restaurants. All of us enjoyed our meals so, so much. My mom was even talking about coming back the next day to try something else on the menu. Later, we took my dog Wednesday and my parents' dogs to the dog park. Then we went to the mall so my mom and my BF could get their various Apple products looked at - he ended up walking away with a new phone because his was not repairable! Lucky guy. I was <----> this close to buying myself something from David Yurman at a jeweler but backed away at the last minute. Surprisingly the jewelry store's prices were cheaper than DY retail prices on their website. I'm going to keep that in mind for next time. We ended the night having an amazing happy hour at home with lots of cheese and dips and crackers, and had hot dogs on the grill. About my outfit - probably the reason you're here and not to read about my life - I got this shirt from Ann Taylor during the mega sale for only $18 - I also got it in white. I bought it because it can easily be worn to work with a blazer, but is perfect for the weekend too because of the cut out in the back and easy loose fit. I rave about AT often, and this time is no exception because my recent order was full of amazing dual purpose (work and play) pieces. I recommend the Dashing Dots Tunic, the Cutout Back Crepe Top, the Palm Print top, and the Twist Wrap Jersey Dress. FYI I took the regular sizes in the Crepe top, Palm Print top and Dress for extra length. I took petites in the Tunic.

Here's what I wore to a 4th of July BBQ at my parents' friends house. They are avid gardeners if you can't tell from the pictures, lol. On the 4th, we ended up just going to the BBQ and then watching all the various fireworks on TV. We watched the DC fireworks and the NYC Macy's fireworks. I preferred the Macy's ones - the DC ones seemed to favor the older folk, haha. I enjoyed the Macy's music, but did anyone notice the FOUR Usher songs in a row?!? I realize he produced the show but dang, way to shamelessly self-promote!

As an aside - My outfits for this trip are turning out rather boring, lol. So far I've worn other things besides jeans during the day, but somehow I end up changing into them before taking pictures so it looks like I'm wearing the same thing every time. Also factor in that the other necklace I brought broke...you'll be seeing a lot of this necklace, haha.

Work to Plane

I don't know about you, but when I travel, I end up panicking the night before and packing at the last minute. One thing I try to do to ease my mind is set out my outfit for the plane the night before. Since I had to go to work before my flight, I decided to dress a bit more casually to work so that it could double for the plane as well. All I did was change my blazer to a jacket and I was good to go. I'm in the DMV for the weekend (DC MD VA - do people still say that these days, lol? I remember hearing it on the radio in college and it stuck with me since then, haha). I didn't pack too much jewelry with me because it just weighs my bag down, but I was sad to find out this morning that one of my favorite Amrita Singh necklaces (last worn here) is broken. I'm now looking for a similar replacement to fulfill my coral/gold necklace opening. I mention this necklace because I packed it to try to add some red to my white and blue for the 4th. I ended up just wearing white and blue, lol. What did you do for the 4th of July?
