Sad Day

Just to preface, I'm going to say something really terrible and then change the subject completely.... I found out today that one of my firm's clients, who I've worked with recently, passed away in jail. I don't know the exact cause of death, but I had been talking to his family and received a letter from him recently saying that he was having kidney problems. I don't know him or his family on any level more personal than a work relationship, but it still hit me really hard. I had just been negotiating a good plea for him and now he's gone. Another attorney told me to get used to it because it will definitely happen a few times over my career. That's unfortunately just the nature of the quality of medical care available in the jails. Ugh.

And now to completely change the subject as promised: I wore this outfit to court today and to the office after. This dress is so comfortable, it really felt like a sweat suit. I also always forget about this necklace. It's one of those puka shell type things from when I was a kid but because it's longer it is still pretty much in-style and I can knot it like I'm wearing it today to change it up a bit. Do you have any super old jewelry that you've held on to and are still able to wear today?

  1. I can't say it gets easier, and I am afraid that if it did we would be in the wrong business. We bust our butts to give their lives, businesses, kids, families, whatever BACK to our clients. If it didn't hurt when they don't get to live that restored life, then it would be time for serious introspection. My Dad used to say when one of his died in prison that it just wasn't fair -- he was sentenced to X number of years -- not life.

Great outfit, though. Love the necklace.

  2. I've worked in a criminal practice, and estate planning practice, and now medical malpractice. People die all over the place. It's always shocking to learn that a client has died, even if you knew if was coming. The worst are when a baby dies. The second-worst are the suicides.

In response to your question, yes, I have had some jewelry since I was a child and I still wear them. Two pieces that come to mind are my silver butterfly necklace (14 th birthday) and my first pearl (11 th birthday.) and I know there are others.

  4. Ugh, I can't even imagine. I guess I should add that not happening to a reason my job is good for me - I don't know how I'd cope with something like that. Now to change the subject...that dress is amazing on you! The center pleat is so perfect and it looks great with the necklace over it!

  5. In case you intend to shop online, you will need to measure oneself very first rather than depend on regular sizes. Obtain your actual measurement and examine it with all the manufacturer's size chart. Also, be cautious in the color from the costume. The color in the dress that you see online may possibly be truly within a slightly various hue so choose secure hues.
