Green tweed jacket

Blog, meet my new favorite jacket. It was my only purchase from Black Friday - a midnight online buy from Zara. I was on the hunt for a forest green suit jacket and matching skirt or dress (Theory had some options but I didn't love the skirt, and it was final sale...) when I came across this jacket which had the color I wanted, but also an interesting texture, and pretty details like the gold buttons. I am now of the mindset that I can never have too many blazers (I am becoming my mother's daughter, lol), so here we are with this one added to my collection. It's now back to full price online, but... maybe it'll go back on sale?

Casual Friday (on a Monday)

I have a bad habit of being cold everywhere I go - even in Miami where air conditioning should be a welcome relief from the heat. I recently picked up this sweater at Target - I was walking around the store freezing - it was an impulse buy. But, thankfully, it's turned out to be a pretty great sweater. It's fairly lightweight, has a loose weave/holes for some ventilation, it's oversized, and doesn't scream "winter." And for $20, it was worth it. It's now on clearance for only $16! I wore this outfit to work on a no-court day last week and was super comfortable.

Office Holiday Party

Today was my office's holiday lunch. I recently picked up this dress from the tailor and knew it was the perfect color to wear to party (it's definitely green in person instead of the slightly teal/turquoise it appears on screen). I had to go to court before the lunch so I accessorized normally and threw on a blazer. I also wore shoes I normally wouldn't wear to court - figuring that 1) it's a Friday and 2) most people are having their holiday parties today too. I got a TON of compliments on the shoes, which was nice, given that I was a bit unsure about wearing them. What did you wear/are you wearing to your office holiday party??

Transitioning a Maxi Dress for Fall

A few weeks ago, I went to Disney World for the Epcot Food & Wine Festival (I highly recommend it - it's already over for 2014 but you should definitely go in 2015!) The day before I left, I checked the weather (at the time it was 85 degrees as usual) and saw it was going to be 60 during the day while in Orlando! That's FREEZING on my Florida-tempurature-scale! I decided to wear this super comfortable maxi dress on the ride up, and packed my black leather jacket to keep me warm. I dressed in even more layers while at the park, but this was great for the ride up. For those in even colder weather than me, (which is almost everyone), you could even secretly wear leggings under this outfit to keep you extra warm. Yay for wearing summer clothes in the winter with a few minor adjustments.

OMG, I'm wearing PANTS

Guys… I'm wearing pants! I haven't worn a business/casual or professional pants outfit on the blog in over a year (I checked - THIS is the last post!). Pants are a tricky thing… unlike skirts or dresses, they really show weight fluctuation, and pant styles change more often than skirts and dresses do. Right now, this is the only pair of pants in my closet (except maybe those green ones from the post above) that I feel comfortable wearing to court! Do you wear pants more, less, or equally to skirts/dresses? I clearly fall into the LESS category.

All Black Everything

I've shied away from my black suits/clothes in the past year because with my pale skin I always think it looks too harsh. But, recently, I found this blazer in the back of my closet and ended up wearing it with all black. I think the shoes and the blazer make the outfit more "special" than if I was wearing a regular black suit. Do you wear black suits to work, or do you think other colors look better on you?

Perforated Sweater Weather

It's Fall - can't you tell by the leaves?! I wore this outfit in mid October while I was in Maryland visiting my parents. This sweater has been one of my most-used items in the past year, and it's from (drumroll please) Old Navy! I think they were ahead of the curve with this perforated sweater, because now similar sweaters are available ALL OVER the place, and for way more $$$. I'm also sporting my new-ish Rebecca Minkoff bag, which I love more and more every day, and my new-to-the-blog leather jacket that I actually got from Zara on super sale about a year ago. I wore this to eat at one of my favorite restaurants in the DC area - Founding Farmers! Seriously love that place.. I think I've asked my parents to take me almost every time I visit :)

Casual Friday

These days, it's a rarity for me to have an "office day" where I don't have to go to court. This is what I wore on my last office day. I tried to tone down the summer feel of the outfit with the burgundy wedges, but it was still pretty bright. I was comfortable and pretty put-together (considering I saw no one except my bosses all day), and that's sometimes all that matters. FYI, my nails are bright pink because I think this was the day before Halloween - so I wasn't going to trial or anything!

Blue & Taupe & Ann Taylor Shoes

This is a pretty typical work/court outfit for me. It's no fuss and easy to throw together, but the color combo is more interesting than a regular matching suit. I love how the color of the dress accentuates the slight pinstripe in the jacket.
In other news - has anyone else noticed that Ann Taylor basically discontinued their "Perfect" pumps?! I guess now that pointed toes are back in style, they veered away from the almond/round toe that made the Perfect Pumps so damn comfortable! The pumps I'm wearing below started out pretty painful (pretty rare for AT shoes), but after consistent wearing I can get through a full day at work and running around court with no issues. Below are a few of my favorite Ann Taylor pumps right now. I'm definitely getting more adventurous with the shoes I wear to work, as long as the rest of my outfit remains professional… I wouldn't think twice about any of the shoes below (even the leopard!)

One Last Summer Outfit

Today is Veterans Day, and I have the day off, so I was finally able to sit down and work on this blog! This is the last outfit I have that is clearly "summer" (although still appropriate for fall in South Florida…), so I'll make the post short and sweet. I wore this on a Saturday about a month ago when the weather finally dropped down to the 70's for a day. I walked from my apartment to a restaurant about a mile away to find out it was closed! So, I was bummed about the restaurant being closed so I walked to Cold Stone and ate basically an entire meal of Birthday Cake Remix, haha. Anyway, sometimes I don't go all out with accessories and jewelry, and I think that's ok. Especially for something as mundane as running errands on a Saturday. Do you dress differently for work than on weekends? I definitely do!

Recent Purchases

I feel like I've curbed my spending significantly in the past few months, but every once in a while I splurge on a little something for myself (albeit with a coupon code handy, of course). I finally splurged on some anti-aging products from Philosophy because I'm just getting irrationally scared of old age. I've only being using the Hope in a Jar & Eye Hope for 2 days so obviously no noticeable results yet, but I'm "hopeful" (har har). Ulta still has 2 more days of their 20% off your whole purchase event going on right now, so if you're interested, now is the time to buy! Get your individual coupon codes in the mail or email! I also picked up some of my favorite bronzer by Too Faced. It's matte so it's good for contouring. I finally bought the famous Seche Vite top coat. In clothing/accessory purchases, I ended up buying myself the Rebecca Minkoff Mini 5-Zip in Biscuit to fill in a hole in my closet for a small brown bag. I went with the 5-Zip instead of the Mini Mac because I already have a Mac, so I wanted to try a different style. And finally, I got the Dolce Vita Kisa pumps in black as an interesting shoe to wear to work. They are taller than I thought and a bit hard to walk in, but I will definitely wear them. What have you bought recently? Have you filled any holes in your closet?

On Work Hairstyles

I think somebody told me once that you shouldn't wear your hair in a high pony tail to work (like below), so, every time I wear it like this I feel sort of ridiculously sinful. Anyway, I haven't worn my hair in a high ponytail to work in a long long time, but when I wore this outfit, I got a LOT of random compliments coupled with "your hair looks good." Great, I'm glad my schlubby, didn't-shower-today hair was impressive. Anyway, I realized I can't even do a proper bun hairstyle for work, so I should probably work on that. Props to anyone who can do pretty up-dos for work with minimal effort - I envy you.

Splurge or Steal: 3.1 Phillip Lim

Upon casual perusal of the Forever 21 website, I immediately noticed a striking resemblance of a bag to one of my "wish list bags" - the 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Mini. If you don't have an extra ~$825 for the 3.1 Phillip Lim, head over to Forever 21 to get these bags for less than 25 bucks! The Forever 21 version comes in a forrest green, bright blue, cream, and black. The blue is probably my favorite :)

On Being Underdressed

So, my friend and I joined this charitable organization that has social elements.. to me it's basically like an adult sorority. We went to our first meeting a few weeks ago and I rushed home from work to change..I kept the top of my outfit business-ish while the bottom was definitely casual. This was a mistake - literally everyone else at the meeting was dressed to the 9's - looked like they were going to a semi-formal event, or at least came straight from work. I should have expected as much from Miami women, but I was naive this time. You can bet I will be dressed "nicer" for the next meeting to fit in :)

Summer to Fall Transition

Let's be honest - I've been wearing this burgundy dress all summer, I just haven't taken many pictures of it, because that would get boring on here. But, here's a combo I haven't shown on the blog yet that I think shows how you can start incorporating some more fall colors NOW without getting rid of your summer colors or fabrics yet, either. This might actually be my favorite way I've worn this dress so far.

Summer Engagement Party & the obvious need for another bag

I think most women can relate - you have that moment standing in front of your closet saying "I have nothing to wear" except your closet is overflowing. I had that moment a few weeks ago when I was getting ready to go to my friend's engagement party. Except it was with purses/bags and not clothes this time. I could NOT find an appropriate bag to wear with this dress! I'm now on the search for a brown/tan/gold smaller bag. I'm thinking the Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC because it can be used as a clutch as well as crossbody and shoulder bag.

P.S., hopefully this colorful dress is somewhat of a seasonal improvement over my obvious cop-out in the last "summer" wedding post with a black dress!

P.P.S - the last time I wore this dress was for my law school graduation 2 years ago! Where NO pictures were taken of it!

Summer Wedding

I wore my new-ish black lace dress from Nordstrom to my cousin's wedding last weekend. The wedding took place at a beautiful castle in New Hampshire. The weather was perfect (maybe even too warm for some, but not for me - I'm used to Miami weather at this point). I wore all gold jewelry, including some new finds from my grandma's collection. I used Lorac Tantalizer over my St. Tropez tan for some extra sparkle on my skin for the special occasion. Summer weddings are definitely the appropriate time to experiment with colors, but I didn't have time to go dress shopping. Plus, I think black can be worn any time of the year. And, floral/lace texture on the dress added some summer to the dress. What have you worn to summer weddings this year?

Polka dot dress & new work pumps

Ah, to be this tan again. I've been neglecting putting on my St. Tropez tanning mousse for the last few weeks - need to get back into that again. So, my Cole Haan Air Violet pumps that I bought last year as my "everyday" work shoe are starting to wear thin in the sole, so I bought the below Pour La Victoire mary-jane style d'orsay shoes as a more-fun replacement. Amazon had them for a great price a few weeks ago - as of this posting they are $81 down from $250 retail. I got mine for even less :) They are much more uncomfortable than the Cole Haan ones, but damn are they stylish.

Moto sweater + grey sheath

Someday I will make a post about my favorite purchases ever and I'm pretty sure this moto sweater will be on the list - unless by then it's disintegrated from over-use. I usually wear this sweater for non-court days at the office and casually, but I've seen some other attorneys wear the exact sweater to court so I did follow suit last week. Plus it was Friday and you know how I feel about court on Fridays (IMO it's more casual! Kinda...). Anyway, here's another look at my "greige" dress and how it looks more grey when you wear it with grey.

Big Kid Couch

I bought my first "real" piece of furniture that's NOT from Ikea.. a couch! It took me a while to get it delivered but I'd recommend it in terms of style and price so far. I can't attest to durability yet as I've had it for a few hours, haha. Macy's is currently having a sale so if you're interested - here it is!
Thinking about changing up the throw pillows for some color - my whole apartment is grey and black and more grey. I'm thinking a deep purple or deep teal but I don't want it to look too girly. Maybe even an orange or green? Suggestions are welcome! (And I'm referring to getting rid of the black and white checked ones for reference).

Firmoo Review, Casual Summer, & a Duckface

So, Firmoo sent me a free pair of glasses to review. I don't wear prescription glasses so I chose a pair of sunglasses. Any pair of glasses on their site is able to be customized to add tints to become sunglasses, which I think is great - they have a lot of styles to choose from. Originally, I was going to choose a pair of wayfarers and add the tint, but the ordering process for the free pair was confusing. If I were paying out of my own pocket it's easy to customize because there's just a check box to add tints/polarization, etc. To make it easier on myself and on the company I ended up choosing a style that's only available as sunglasses so there was no confusion. I decided to "go big or go home" with these, haha. They have a "Virtual Look Viewer" where you can upload a selfie and try on the different glasses to see how they'll look. Each pair also comes with a recommended PD range. The visualizer plus the PD range help you to pick a pair of glasses that best suits your face shape and size. I didn't know what a PD was until I browsed the website, but apparently you can measure the distance between your pupils in millimeters. These glasses below were clearly on the larger end of my range but I think girls can get away with giant bug glasses - they are chic!

Firmoo also offers a "first pair free" program for new customers. Check it out - it's definitely something I would try if I wore prescription glasses! They have a few styles to choose from as part of the free promotion.

As far as my particular glasses go - they arrived in a sturdy and cute map-print case, along with a fabric cleaning wipe, an eyeglass fixer kit, and a cloth carrying case. My frames are plastic with a tortoiseshell pattern. The tints of the glasses were customizable to all sorts of colors and from light to dark tint. Mine are dark brown. I think they are good quality and I'd definitely order from them again (with my own money!).
Oh and here's a duck-face pic of me below because I think it's kind of awkward to take closeup pics of my face. Also an opportunity to see my accessories better :)
Have any of you ordered from Firmoo? Anyone going to try the "first pair free" program? Let me know!

How I Stopped Biting My Nails

I used to bite my nails. I bit them for about 21 years, and last year, almost to the day, I made the decision to stop. I had been working as a lawyer for a year and I started to notice people's hands more at work and at networking events (all that hand shaking I think). To me, it was very obvious when someone had short bitten nails. I started to think - if I'm noticing it on other people, people must notice it on me. I thought it looked unprofessional and a bit juvenile. So I made the decision to try to stop.
(By the way, I'm sorry but I don't have any "before" photos because I didn't have the foresight a year ago to think I was going to do a post on this.. Below are some of my favorite manicures I've had over the last year.) Anyway, here's some of my tips on how I quit my worst bad habit.
1. I started out by getting a set of acrylic nails put on. These can usually stay on for at least 2 weeks, which would give my nails underneath time to grow out. Plus, the acrylic is really hard - so hard that I could still put my nails in my mouth, but I couldn't physically bite my fingernails because they were so hard. I left the acrylics on for about 3 weeks to let the nails under grow. As an aside, I know acrylics basically ruin your nails, but I was starting from scratch and knew my particular purpose. I purely did it to grow some initial length.
2. After I got the acrylics taken off, I got a professional manicure done to even out the ragged edges. But my real step 2 was that I started getting gel/Shellac manicures for about 2-3 months. This also "ruins" your nails and makes them paper thin, but the trick for me was not physically being able to bite my nails. The gel polish is pretty thick, but still thinner than acrylics. Therefore, I was still able to do the action of putting my nails in my mouth without physically biting the nail off. It wasn't until about December of 2013 that I weaned myself off biting altogether and was able to move on to regular manicures.
3. After my nails had grown long enough to my liking, I started getting manicures every 2 weeks. I found that whenever the polish chipped, I was more likely to revert back to biting my nails, so my #1 tip is to always have a polished manicure with no chips. The prettier my nails looked, the less I wanted to ruin them.
Essie  - I think it's "Too Taboo"
4. As I finally completely stopped biting, I let my nails grow longer and longer - this was a mistake. Whenever I let them get too long inevitably at least one nail would break or crack, and I'm back to square one on that nail. I now keep my nails pretty short (like all of the above photos) to make sure I don't break a nail.
(This is not the above color - but it's similar and it's one of my favorites - Essie "Chinchilly" is probably the color I choose most at my manicure place)
Ring: Michael Kors (similar)
5. After 21 years biting my nails, they were very, very short. I had damaged my nails pretty badly but hoped that as the nails grew they would reattach to the skin. Unfortunately, after a year, there has been little to no reattachment. This results in me always wearing opaque nail polish because I just hate the way the nails look without it. I accidentally chose a see-through pale pink polish at my last manicure appointment, so you can see what my nails actually look like below. They aren't terrible, but I'm still self conscious about how they look "bare," or without opaque polish.
Finally, I want to say that I definitely did not quit cold turkey. I bit my nails a few times over the last year. But I usually caught myself doing it, stopped, and immediately filed the nail a bit to get rid of the rough/jagged edge. Despite a few biting setbacks, I think the thing that kept me going was looking down and seeing pretty nails. I now love changing my polish and I've found that it's a great accessory to an outfit. Plus it's fun to buy pretty polishes :)

So, yeah, this was kind of a weird/personal post for me. I don't usually talk about my life much on the blog, as you can tell. I'd love to hear from anyone who also used to bite their nails, anyone who currently does and is looking to stop, - or anyone who's got some favorite polishes to share! My collection is growing and growing, with Butter London polishes at the top of my list. I LOVE their glitters!

Greige

Theory was having a great sale a few weeks ago and I purchased the below dress and matching blazer at 40% off retail. I've wanted a tan/light brown suit for a while, and the color "gray oat" looked perfect online... I should have probably known by the "gray" in "gray oat" that the actual color was more of a "greige" than straight up tan/brown. It's not the color I wanted but it certainly is versatile as greige can match with blacks, grays, and silvers just as easily as browns, tans, and golds.

Flashback

I was with one of my friends when I bought this blazer and she immediately was like "omg put that down, it looks like something out of Ferris Bueller's day off" and I said "that's why I like it!" Anyway, it was only $35 and I really like the colors and pattern, plus it's very soft, so I figured I'd try it out. I wore this to court on a Friday when I only had 1 courtroom to go to. I would never wear this to trial because of the sort of loud pattern, but I think it's great for a Friday or more casual day at the office.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2014

I'm so grateful for the opportunity that I had this year to go to a few of the Swim Week shows last weekend. This year, I tried to soak in more of the sights rather than try to capture images with my camera or phone. There really is no point in me trying to take amazing pictures because there were like 50+ photographers at every show, and I'm sure amazing images are already online! I had 3 possible outfits that I was choosing from, and I was surprised by my own last-second choice to go with this very old dress (possibly tunic that I just wear as a dress, lol) (5 years!) I figured I am always drawn to my "new" clothes so I should take the opportunity to wear something old that I still like and pair it with new items (my shoes) and some loved but rarely worn items (my bag). Unfortunately my shoes got a littttttle messed up in a torrential downpour, but I think with some scrubbing I can get them to look good as new. Check out what I wore below along with my favorite bikinis from the shows I saw, along with videos of the Dolores Cortes, Frankie's Bikinis, and Wildfox shows!

Little Black (Lace) Dress

I went shopping with a friend of mine 2 weekends ago and I picked up this black lace dress on a whim at Nordstrom. After just recently posting about not owning a real "LBD" now I can say I do! FYI this dress by ASTR runs very small in the waist, with an XS seeming like it fits similarly to my 00 items. An online search revealed the dress also comes in white lace.. and I honestly have to practice restraint not to go out and get the white version too.

The Zara seasonal sale is in full swing (anyone pick up anything good?) and I ordered the below jacket to try during a 1 AM shopping spree (a rarity these days for me). Brown Tweed & LBD

I always hear about the "LBD" (little black dress) and I always think to myself "I don't own one." And I kind of don't. I don't have a fancy/sexy/perfectly fitting black dress in case some last minute "occasion" comes up where I need a perfect dress. But I do have this Theory "LBD" that is my go-to work dress recently. This is mostly a work-wear blog, and most people in the United States work 5 days a week (or 70% of the week if you want to crunch numbers), so I think it's more practical to have a LBD for work than for a random weekend event. Also, since I got this dress tailored, I could even probablyyy wear it on the weekend if I wanted to. Ah, the magic of tailoring. Maybe I do have a LBD after all. Do you own a LBD, or a work wear LBD?
